Planning and Statistics Authority Releases The Consumer Price Index April 2021 (Base year 2018=100)

  • 0.06% monthly increase on CPI of April 2021.
  • 1.02% annual increase on CPI of April 2021, compared with April 2020.

 
The Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of April 2021. The CPI of April 2021 reached to 97.24 point showing an increase by 0.06% when compared to CPI of March 2021. Compared to CPI of April 2020, [Y-o-Y basis], an increase of 1.02% has been recorded in the general index (CPI) of this month.
 
An analysis [on M-o-M basis] of CPI for April 2021 compared with CPI, March 2021, showed that there were five main groups, where respective indices in this month have increased, namely: “Recreation and Culture” by 1.56%, followed by “Miscellaneous Goods and Services” by 1.35%, “Transport” by 0.96%, “Furniture and Household Equipment” by0.24%, and “Education” by 0.05%. A decrease has been recorded in “Food and Beverages” by 1.19%. followed by “Clothing and Footwear” by 0.97%, Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” by 0.52%, “Restaurants and Hotels” by 0.13%, and “Communication” by 0.10%. “Tobacco”, “Health”, and had remained flat at the last month’s price level. 

A comparison of the CPI, April 2021 with the CPI, April 2020 (Annual Change), an increase has been recorded in the general index (CPI), by 1.02%. This [Y-o-Y] price increase primary due to the prices rising in six groups namely: “Transport” by 13.40%, “Restaurants and Hotels” by 6.55%, Communication” by 4.03%, “Education” by 3.79%, “Miscellaneous Goods and Services” by 3.57%, and Furniture and Household Equipment” by 3.29%. A decrease has been shown in price levels of five groups namely: Recreation and Culture” by 7.83%, Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” by 5.81%, “Clothing and Footwear” by 5.75%, “Food and Beverages” by 0.40% and “Health” by 0.07%. No changes recorded on “Tobacco”.

The CPI of April 2021 excluding “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” group stands at 99.65 points recorded an increase of 0.20%, when compared to the index of March 2021, and a 2.80% when compared to the CPI of April 2020.
