The New Qatari Education Directory Finalized

7 January 2010

Within the preparations for the 2010 Population and Housing Census, the Statistics Authority has finalized the Qatari Standard Classification of Education Directory on the basis of the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED).

(ISCED) issued by UNESCO in 1997, taking into consideration the addition or deletion of educational fields that suit educational requirements in the State of Qatar. It has been decided that the Qatari classification should be flexible in terms of its preparation and accuracy in scientific classification so that it is expandable to admit the addition of new fields of specialization which may emerge in the future, In the preparation of this directory, the Statistics Authority has made use of the experiences of various Arab countries and countries of the region. Since population censuses are the main source to identify the population demographic, social and economic characteristics in Qatar in a specific time and due to the major importance of such data for general development as well as for planning in various sectors, especially education, human resources, etc., the directory has been prepared because of the need for it to classify and coordinate educational statistics and link them with workforce statistics as well as demographic and economic statistics.

This will serve educational planning and workforce planning. Using this directory in the General Population Census would make it possible to acquire data on the category of educated people of the population. To facilitate international comparison of educational statistics, it has been decided in the preparation of this directory that it should conform to the educational levels and programs in ISCED.
