QSA announced the preliminary results of the Census of Population, Housing and Establishments

Statistics Authority has published the Preliminary results of the Census of Population, Housing and Establishments 2010, which is the biggest statistical operation that's been conducted in Qatar 

This census includes all individuals, households, Buildings, housing units and establishments in the country, where it would provide the latest statistics, information and indicators that's to support the national developments strategies 2011-2016.

Census data show a total population of 1,696,563 as of April 20, 2010, a growth in population of 128% since 2004.


In line with the National Development Strategy this Census used handheld computers and the internet to collect data, edit the data, and produce summary results in record time with better quality.

His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani, President of the Statistics Authority, has appreciated the support and coordination that Census has got from the authority and from the population by responding with the census which has impact positively as a success.

His Excellency has noted that the growth in population, housing units, buildings and establishments since the last census in 2004.

The findings are in line with expectations and clearly quantify the changes that have occurred during this census:

1.Buildings total 148,532, an increase of 50% since 2004

2.Housing Units total 254,309, an increase of 102% since 2004

3.Villas as housing units totaled 63,462, an increase of 102% since 2004

4.Apartments as housing units totaled 92,901, an increase of 146% since 2004
5.Rooms as housing units totaled 35,712, an increase of 243% since 2004

6.Males totaled 1,284,867; this amounted to 76% of the population compared to 67% in 2004

His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani stated the final results of the Census will be used as a means to direct the National Development Strategies in various sectors. The statistics will be studied for years to come and will be the basis for many decisions by Government Ministries to improve the lives of residents. The GSDP and The Population Committee will use Census data in their analysis of living conditions, the economy and the general state of people in the Country. New roads, schools, hospitals, parks, etc. will be planned based on Census numbers. New education and job programs will be devised to ensure labor market needs can be met.

Businesses will be very interested in knowing which communities are currently under served in terms of the products or services the company provides. New establishments will be opened based on Census data. GPS coordinates and GIS maps showing Census data will quickly highlight results and needs. School age children can be quickly plotted to plan for new schools. Elderly population can be identified to plan for health resources to serve their needs. All of these fit into the National Development Strategy and the Census will be used to benchmark where the Country is today and contribute to the development of strategies to move towards Vision 2030. October 20 will come very soon and the QSA wants stakeholders and data users to be prepared to make use of this rich source of data.
