​QATAR FOREIGN INVESTMENT SURVEY 2018

The Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) in collaboration with the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) conducted the seventh Foreign Investment Survey in 2019, for the reference year 2018. Preliminary estimates of the survey results are presented in this press release.
This survey obtained data from about 150 significant enterprises that had accounted for more than 90 percent of total investments and by various functional, geographical and economic activity (industrial) characteristics. For the remaining enterprises with foreign investments (inward/outward) data were estimated on past trends.
Revisions were made to the published 2017 data on new and revised data provided by respondents.
The objective of the survey, conducted in collaboration with QCB, was to cover all major enterprises (private and public) operating in the national economy. However, data could be obtained only from privately owned companies and public corporations. International financial transactions made by individuals and by the Government were not covered. Users are accordingly cautioned that the survey results are not strictly comparable with the BOP /IIP statements of the QCB.  
Liabilities to non-residents
• At the end of 2018, liabilities to non-residents increased by 10% or 66.6 Bn QR from 648.1 Bn QR  to 714.7 Bn QR.
• At the end of 2018, other foreign investments accounted for 68% or 488.4 Bn QR, followed by foreign direct investment in Qatar at 123.3 Bn QR or 17% and portfolio investments at 99.9 Bn QR or 14% of the total liabilities.
• At the end of 2018, stock of inward FDI had been reduced by 6.0 Bn QR due to net outflows of FDI and other changes during the year.
Assets with non-residents
• At the end of 2018, Qatar’s assets with non-residents decreased by 8.3 Bn QR from 400.5 Bn QR at the end of the previous year to QR 392.2 Bn QR. 
• At the end of 2018, other foreign investments consisting of long term loans and trade related short term financial instruments accounted for 53% or 207.5 Bn QR of the total assets, followed by foreign direct investment abroad at 146.8 Bn QR or 37% and portfolio investments (financial securities) at 37.5 Bn QR or 10%.
• During 2018, net out flows of foreign direct investment abroad amounted to 1.6 Bn QR.
