Births and Deaths

Vital Statistics is considered as one of the main pillars of population statistics. It can be obtained from vital registrations systems or from population surveys and censuses. Through vital statistics (births, deaths, marriages and divorces) indicators on population growth rate and trend can be derived, as well as demographic behaviour of the society. These indicators can be used as indicatives for achieving short-term and long-term objectives as well as improving social and economic situations of the society. Official records of the Supreme Council of Health and HMC are the sources of births and deaths data. To understand the content of the data, the following remarks should be realized: 1. Late registry. Some individuals do not register births in time, and registration is delayed to a later date. Hence, these births are not registered in year of birth. 2. Births are registered according to the mother's usual place of residence (name of municipality) at time of birth
